Artificial insemination

syrrogacy 2.jpg

Does ovulation not occur in the cycle? Did the doctor diagnose cervical factor of infertility? What to do to finally see the cherished 2 strips in the test? Intrauterine insemination (IUI) will help, it is an ART method that is closest to the natural process of conception.

Indications for insemination

Indications for a woman:

  • cervical factor of infertility;
  • vaginismus;
  • egg maturation disorder;
  • ovulation disorder;
  • idiopathic infertility

Indications for a man:

  • sexual and ejaculatory disorders;
  • a slight decrease in fertility

As a rule, intrauterine insemination is performed with the use of husband's sperm. However, in some cases, during the procedure donor sperm is used. Artificial insemination with donor sperm may be recommended if:

  • a significant decrease in fertility on the side of a man (for example, necrospermia);
  • poor medical and genetic prognosis (high risk of passing on hereditary diseases to the child);
  • a woman has no sexual partner

2-3 hours

Contraindications to insemination

Insemination cannot be used if the fallopian tubes are blocked. Why? As we wrote above, artificial intrauterine insemination is as close as possible to a natural process: doctors only process sperm (to increase its fertilizing ability, eliminate the risk of infection or an allergic reaction of a woman to specific proteins) and "deliver" it to the uterine cavity. After that, the sperm move completely independently into the fallopian tubes, where the mature egg released from the ovary is located after ovulation, and fertilizes it. Then the fertilized oocyte moves along the tube into the uterus and implants to its wall.

How is the artificial insemination procedure carried out?

This procedure does not require hospitalization. The patient arrives at the clinic, where the doctor inserts specially processed sperm into the uterus through the vagina, placed in a catheter. In 30 minutes after the manipulation, the woman can already go home. In order to increase the chances of success, doctors recommend abstaining from sexual activity until pregnancy is determined. Typically, one to three procedures are performed in one menstrual cycle. Before conducting IUI, the patient must be examined.

The effectiveness of artificial insemination

The pregnancy chance as a result of using this ART method is on average about fifteen to twenty percent and largely depends on factors such as the patient's age and the quality of the sperm used. According to the recommendations of the WHO (World Health Organization), artificial insemination is carried out no more than six times, but in Russian practice the number of attempts usually does not exceed three to four. If during this period the pregnancy has not occurred, the doctor may recommend other methods of assisted reproductive technologies, for example, IVF (in vitro fertilization). According to statistics, if pregnancy occurs after the procedure, then in almost 90% of cases it is a result of one of the first three attempts. Further, the chances of successful conception are sharply reduced, and the continuation of treatment with this method does not seem advisable.
